Close-up of the scariest “door to hell” in the world, no one dares to approach

The world’s hottest “door to hell” is home to some impressive images that will leave many people amazed. Located in Afar, Ethiopia, Erta Ale boasts a massive lava lake where temperatures regularly surpass 1100 degrees Celsius. This lava lake has been constantly active since 1906, shining brilliantly whenever the lava rises and causing many people to refer to Erta Ale as a “smoking” mountain.

Unfortunately, Erta Ale’s history has not always been peaceful. The last time the lava lake erupted with great force was in September 2005, causing the death of 250 people and forcing the entire surrounding population to evacuate. Two years later, another lava eruption occurred, leaving two people missing. Even now, the lava lake continues to erupt, showcasing the power and danger of nature.

According to photographer Santos, “Erta Ale crater is always active, lava is always flowing up and down, and can overflow at any time. That is the most dangerous thing.” Santos captured stunning images of the crater using a drone, but even this required him to sit close to the controls of the plane, in the midst of the extreme heat that can melt anything. He had to be very patient and careful because the lava can create dangerous cracks in the ground.

The desert surrounding Erta Ale is considered one of the hottest places on Earth, and the lava lake’s continued activity is a constant reminder of the dangers of living near an active volcano. Nevertheless, Santos’ aerial photographs of the crater are breathtaking, showcasing the power and beauty of nature in its most raw and volatile form.

The lava lake has been continuously active for more than 100 years.

The temperature in the lake can be up to 1100 degrees Celsius, the heat wave is extremely hot.

Around the lava lake there can always appear dangerous cracks.

Lava erupts from the mouth of the mountain.

In the past, there have been many times when volcanic eruptions caused disasters.

To capture these images, photographer Santos had to use a drone.
